Venetian Plaster

Venetian plaster is a Renaissance-era Italian decorative plastering technique — traditionally a lime-based plaster known as marmorino — built up in thin layers and burnished to a soft, polished sheen that resembles natural marble or stone. Today it is executed with both traditional lime plasters and modern mineral-based systems, and it remains one of the most sought-after finishes for feature walls, powder rooms, fireplace surrounds, and luxury interiors, pairing naturally with the kind of executive spaces we finish through our Luxury Wood Offices service.

The result depends entirely on the process. Substrate prep has to be meticulous — a smooth, properly primed base is essential before plaster ever touches the wall. From there, the plaster is applied by hand with a steel trowel in multiple thin layers, typically three or more, with each layer partially burnished before the next goes on. The final layer is compressed and polished with a trowel or burnishing tool to develop the finish's signature depth and movement, and an optional wax or sealer topcoat can be added for durability and extra luster, particularly in powder rooms or other higher-moisture spaces. This is entirely hand-applied artisanal work — it is the trowel technique itself, not a sprayed or rolled coating, that creates the depth Venetian plaster is known for.
