Microcement is a layered, resin-modified cementitious finish applied at only a few millimetres thick, producing a continuous, seamless surface with a soft concrete character. It suits contemporary interiors: feature walls, bathroom walls, shower zones, fireplace surrounds, and other surfaces where the design calls for one unbroken material rather than tile grid lines or painted drywall.
The system is only as good as what sits behind it. Substrate movement, cracks, moisture, and contamination all telegraph through a thin cementitious layer, so we assess and prepare the base before any coats are applied — including waterproofing membranes in wet zones, which are part of the specification rather than an optional extra.
Colour and texture are approved on a sample board. Microcement is coloured through the material, and the trowel work gives each surface its own subtle movement, so the sample sets the expectation for variation as well as tone. The sealer is matched to the room: a matte living-room wall and a shower wall need different protection systems and maintenance rules.
Microcement sits alongside Venetian plaster, Marmorino and limewash in Sigma's specialty-finish work within our broader luxury painting service. If you are deciding between a mineral plaster and microcement, the honest answer usually comes from sampling both in the actual room.
Microcement itself is not a waterproofing layer. In showers and wet zones it is installed over a waterproofing membrane and finished with a sealer rated for the exposure. Specified and sealed correctly, it performs well in bathrooms; skipped steps are how these systems fail.
Often yes — over stable tile, drywall, and cementitious substrates — after adhesion, flatness, and movement are assessed. Loose, cracked, or flexing substrates must be corrected first, because a thin cementitious layer records everything beneath it.
Microcement is a cementitious, resin-modified system with a contemporary concrete character and strong wet-area capability. Venetian plaster and Marmorino are lime plasters with classical mineral depth, and limewash is a thin breathable mineral wash. We help clients choose by sampling the candidates in the actual room.
