Limewash is a breathable mineral finish for compatible masonry and prepared interior surfaces. Interior drywall, exterior brick, and previously painted masonry require different primers or product systems, so substrate identification comes before colour selection.
Bare mineral masonry can accept a mineral limewash designed to bond with the substrate. Standard drywall normally needs a compatible mineral primer or base coat. Previously painted brick may not accept a traditional limewash directly because the existing film blocks mineral bonding.
On exterior brick, the objective is to retain vapour movement and accept natural weathering. In Ontario, exposure, freeze-thaw cycles, roof runoff, salts, and the condition of the mortar all affect the specification and maintenance expectation.
