A Level 5 finish adds a full skim coat over the entire drywall surface, on top of standard taping and sanding, so joints and fasteners cannot telegraph through the final finish. It is the specification for surfaces where ordinary Level 4 work shows: walls washed by natural or grazing light, ceilings under skylights or long pot-light runs, gloss and deep colours, and the flat backdrops that designer interiors and specialty plaster finishes demand.
The difference is visible at exactly the moments that matter in a high-end home — late afternoon sun raking down a hallway, a dark feature wall in sheen, a two-storey foyer lit from above. Paint quality cannot compensate for a surface that undulates at the joints; the flatness has to be built into the substrate.
We deliver Level 5 as part of custom home and new construction painting, as preparation for Venetian plaster, Marmorino and microcement, and as a standalone upgrade in renovations where an existing wall needs to be brought up to critical-light standard. The scope names which surfaces receive the skim coat, the primer system, and the lighting conditions the finish is being built for.
If you are unsure whether your project needs Level 5, the honest test is the lighting plan and the colour schedule: flat paint in soft light forgives a Level 4 wall, while gloss, deep colour, and grazing light do not. We will tell you which surfaces genuinely justify the upgrade rather than specifying it everywhere.
Drywall finishing levels run from 0 to 5. Level 4 — taped joints, coated fasteners, sanded — is the standard behind most painted walls. Level 5 adds a thin skim coat over the entire surface so joints and screws cannot telegraph through paint under demanding light or sheen.
Wherever the light or the finish is unforgiving: walls washed by windows or grazing light, ceilings under skylights and pot-light runs, gloss or dark colours, and any surface receiving a trowelled plaster finish. On softly lit walls in flat paint, Level 4 done well is usually enough — and we will say so.
Yes. After adhesion and surface assessment, existing walls can be skim-coated, sanded, and primed to critical-light standard as part of a renovation repaint. It is priced by area and condition, and scheduled with the dust control the rest of the home requires.
